Big Pit wins BALI award for regeneration project

A regeneration project using approximately 95% recycled or reclaimed materials to create an attractive and educational environment known as Coity Tip trail and linking Big Pit to the Pontypool & Blaenavon Railway and Garn Lakes has won a prestigious BALI (British Association of Landscape Industries) award.

The trail was developed by Big Pit, Torfaen County Borough Council, Pontypool & Blaenavon Railway, and managed by Blakedown Landscapes (Operations) Ltd. It was funded by the Welsh Assembly Government’s Heads of the Valleys Initiative and the Department for Economy and Transport.

The nature walk around Coity Tip comprises a boardwalk around the tip pond, interpretation panels and a trail leaflet. This opens up an area which was previously inaccessible.
